Martha Jean's Blog

This site WAS going to be an online portfolio or resume, but now it is mostly a virtual display case for a few things I want to remember. However, if you get curious you can view my resume by clicking on the link to the left. One more thing - check out my vintage shop on Etsy if you like! It's always a delightful work in progress. :)

Raw-food raid highlights a hunger

Some people balk at restrictions on selling unprocessed milk and other foods. ‘How can we not have the freedom to choose what we eat?’ one says. Regulators say the rules exist for safety and fairness.

I Love Fair Trade Chocolate Day

azspot:

Yesterday, Hershey’s declared May 18th “I Love Reese’s Day,” which was basically an Internet promotion to get people to think about, talk about, and hopefully buy their chocolate and peanut butter confections. But a lot of people don’t love Reese’s, because Hershey’s sources its cocoa from plantations which use child and forced labor and have repeatedly refused to make a commitment to buying better cocoa. So that’s why I’m declaring today, May 19th, “I Love Fair Trade Chocolate Day.” Take that, Hershey’s!

Several organizations came together yesterday to proclaim why they don’t love Reese’s. They don’t love the fact that Hershey’s buys cocoa from areas where up to 15% of the children living there were forced into labor in 2009. They don’t love that Hershey’s has fallen well behind rivals like Cadbury in developing sustainable and fair sourcing policies. And they don’t love that when consumers bite into a Reese’s cup, they might be biting into slavery. And I’ve got to agree with them.

Dang it, shall I soon not be able to eat anything unless it was grown in my own garden? And even the plants I purchase from my local garden center will be suspect (what if they are clones, or from facilities that use tons of hormones and pesticides to grow them?).  Why has food production become so evil?  Why must we be paranoid about tomatoes, spinach, and now chocolate? Michael Pollan, how we need thee…

'Growing concern' over marketing tainted beef

Suddenly, my years of refusing to eat ground beef seem a little less paranoid.

Hipsters on food stamps

notthatkindagay:

They’re young, they’re broke, and they pay for organic salmon with government subsidies. Got a problem with that?

I’m pretty sure I approve.  How about you?
